Ah, so winter is finally over and you’re ready to cast off your coat, discard your scarf, and get into the spirit of spring. However, once you dust off your old clothes you might find your wardrobe looking a little lacklustre. New season new you? Here we offer our best tips to freshen up your look and put a spring in your step.
Truly, the 1990s are back with a vengeance, and adding some of the decade’s edgy style to your wardrobe has never been easier. Urban fashions such as oversized sweaters, shiny rain jackets, and sportswear are practical and have the added bonus of bringing a fresh, youthful feel to your outfit. Add in a few pops of bright, primary colors and a new pair of kicks and you’re good to go!
During winter our mainstays are usually heavy fabrics such as wool, denim, and fleece, but now that the sun is coming out we can afford to lighten up a little. This spring try out some diaphanous fabrics such as mesh, satin, or even tulle to create a dreamy, romantic look. Bare some skin with sheer materials or layer up with ruffles, long skirts and big sleeves to achieve a graceful, feminine silhouette.
As Miranda Priestly so cuttingly puts it in The Devil Wears Prada, florals for spring are not exactly “groundbreaking.” Still, floral or otherwise, patterns are a great way to add some fun to your outfit. This season, geometric shapes, whimsical illustrations, and brightly colored prints are the name of the game. Ease into this funky fashion with a statement silk scarf, a paisley patterned shirt, or wear head to toe to make sure all eyes are on you.
While they can often leave you looking washed out during the dark months, pastels are making a big comeback for spring. Dusky pinks, minty greens, or pale lilacs - soft, subtle, and often very flattering, there’s a pastel color to suit any skin tone. Pair them with black or white to create a muted, professional appearance, or mix and match for a brighter, more striking look.
At this time of year, we usually embark on a process of cleaning out our homes, but do we remember to do the same with our wardrobes? This season, do a serious spring clean and root out those items that have seen better days - after all, the best part of getting rid of old stuff is getting new stuff to replace it! Invest in practical basics such as tailored jeans, a classic trench coat, or whatever it is you need to really bring your wardrobe up to date with minimal effort. Starting off the new year on the right foot and upping your style game is easier than you thought!
