16648- exercise

Are you confused about how long you should be exercising for heart health protection? There are many types of exercise too: cardio, strength training, Crossfit, swimming, etc.  So, how do you know how long, what to to do and how many times a week you should be moving?

Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, is the Director of Women's Heart Health at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.and a cofounder of the Global Nutrition and Health Alliance (GNHA). With heart disease being the number one killer of women, we checked in with Dr. Steinbaum and asked:

How much exercise is really enough for heart health?

The American Heart Association has clear recommendations that state the ideal amount of exercise is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week, or 75 minutes of high-intensity exercise. Even brisk walking counts if it’s a tough workout for you. And the 150-minutes can be broken up into 30-minute sessions five days a week or even in 10-minute chunks throughout the day. Getting your heart rate up can improve vitality, decrease the incidence of heart disease and stroke, prevent obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and improve mood.
