As a music lover, one of the greatest joys is discovering new music. However, with so many artists out there, it can be difficult to sift through them all and find someone you like. Well, look no further.
Meet Kristeen Young.
A pianist with a dynamic vocal range and a penchant for rock, Young will be performing at this year’s South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, and is certainly someone you should be listening to, if you aren’t doing so already.
Originally hailing from St. Louis, this rocker studied piano in college at St. Louis’ Webster University before joining and performing with local bands, November 9th, and Water Works. Young then teamed up with drummer Jeff White, and she proceeded to record her first solo album, 1997’s Meet Miss Young and Her All Boy Band.
After releasing her second album, Enemy, in 1999, Young decided to pack up for the Big Apple to expand her musical repertoire. It was here that she began to gain a significant following that eventually led to a feature by David Bowie on her third album, 2004’s Breasticles.
Since then, Young has collaborated with such artists as Morrissey, Lou Rossi, and Dave Grohl, who were all featured on her latest album, 2014’s The Knife Shift, which led to arguably her best known song to date, “Pearl of a Girl”, which has helped loft her status in many music circles.
Recently, Young made her U.S. TV debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, performing “Pearl of a Girl” with Grohl, and Grohl’s former Foo Fighters band mate, Pat Smear.
And if you’d like to catch Young live for your very own self, you can always pack your bags and head to Austin for an incredible experience at SXSW! We certainly think it’s worth the trip.
